Jember Fashion Carnival

Jember is one of the cultural city in the East Java Province, Indonesia. Started in 1998 by designer Dynand Fariz, the fashion carnival aims to encourage creativity and get youth involved in fashion. Over the years it has evolved to include various themes, from” world treasures” to “evolution.”

Jember Fashion Carnival brought out some outrageously vibrant costumes and performances over the weekend, with the grand parade taking place Sunday. The four-day event is among the biggest fashion parades in world, drawing out hundreds of performers and thousands of attendants. This year more than 850 people paraded along a 3.6-kilometer stretch of road in the East Java regency, dressed as everything from beetles to stalagmites.

Every year, Mr. Fariz travels to Jember from Jakarta on the weekends to train participants, sharing images with them from places and events that relate to the year’s theme, according to his profile on the website of Ashoka, a non-profit organization that support social entrepreneurs. Mr. Fariz was selected as an Ashoka fellow in 2006. Participants also get training on facial expressions and help choreograph moves they’ll set to music that accompanies them along the parade route.

One of his latest design had been worn by Elvira Devinamira, the Indonesian contestant of Miss Universe 2015. Elvira Devinamira struts her stuff in her costume at the 2015 Miss Universe pageant over the weekend in Miami, Fla. The 21-year-old stunner won the Best National Costume for her piece, which she said weighed about 20 kilos (which translates to about 44 lbs!).

The costume was inspired by the Borobudur Temple in Central Java from her home country. The Best National Costume award came after fans voted for three days and #MissUniverseIndonesia was the top trending vote!
