ART AND DESIGN WORKS

COLOUR THEORY

The colour project is to introduce and develop as our understanding of the physical and psychological factor which determine colour perception. We do the experiment and practice use of colours mixing in wet medium to flat, matt even consistency with the use of primary colours of gouache (primary blue, primary yellow, primary red, magenta, ultramarine blue, white and black). Thus, from this task, we can have more understanding to identify and name colours as well as the use of colour terminology.

TEXTILE DESIGN PROJECT

The brief is to create a new and innovative fabric design based on future technology which is then to be integrated on one of the design areas such as interior, furniture, fashion, costume, apparel, textile arts and rugs.

We require to present  three fabric textile design with each design should be different but linked in some way with no use of representational images and then rendered in mixed media. The first design is large pattern, second design is small/fine pattern and the third design is the textured, plain colour (no pattern).

COLLAGE

The collage is combination of my drawings and images from my choice of magazine. The idea that I want to show for the collage is actually is about how different colours, textures and patterns can relate to each other and create a new image.

I choose some images from magazine, cut multiple copies of previous drawings and then begin by arranging the composition. This process will allow me to explore different scenarios/ situations/ compositions.

I like to travelling and working with colours, materials and patterns when doing my project. Then, I look for some images which related to those concept and start to arrange them in a conceptual and thematic design.

FUROSHIKI

Furoshiki is a Japanese traditional wrapping cloth which uses a simple square of silk or nylon cloth for gift wrapping, grocery  shopping bag and even clothing.

For this furoshiki project, I decide to use the theme of cocktail garden party with the motifs are inspired by Art Deco movement. The furoshiki will be used as compliment for cocktail party such as table cloth, wine bottle wrapping and also fashion accesories such as a headwear related to art deco fashion style .

Art Deco style relies on bold designs, clear lines, vibrant colours and patterns. Geometric shapes and intense colour schemes are prominent. Art Deco’s main characteristics are derived from the various painting styles that appeared of the early twentieth century, ranging from Cubism to Italian Futurism. Art Deco is usually associated to the architecture of the 1930s and speed and luxury.

PATTERN HARVEST

This project introduce us to the creative and practical skills required for surface design and translation to textile fabrication (sampling). We will be introduced to the design studio and workshop practices to develop surface based textile designs, with specific application to hand screen-printing and surface techniques such as embellishment and fabric manipulation.  You will apply these newly acquired skills to design & produce a design folio of co-ordinating textile designs. This design folio must reflect our research research, personalised theme, colour palette and design development.

For this project, we need to Interpret and translate the concept of ‘Pattern Harvest’ incorporating the use of botanical/vegetation motifs for contemporary fashion fabrics for either men’s or women’s fashion market under the umbrella of a selected theme direction.

I choose Alice McCall as my brand because of its various unique printed design that is shown differently every season. This label has eclectic style with playful sensibility using unique detailing and charming folk-like craftmanship. From this characteristics, it would be great potential to use Australian native flowers as a new look and design innovation especially for this brand which already well-known with contemporary atmosphere of Australian  design.

ACMI x RMIT BA TEXTILE DESIGN  PROJECT COLLABORATION 'MOVING IMAGE'

This project responses to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) celebration and promotion the idea of moving image in all its forms - film, television, games and digital culture. We are required to design a range of directional textile prints that are suitable for a product outcome that can be applied to merchandise which will be sold by ACMI. These textile design will be conceptual and sophisticated and be trend-driven. They will be suitable for commercial application to either fashion, accessories or homewares outcome for the up coming seasons of S/S 2017 and A/W 2017.

My design collection 'Urban Fabric' revisits the ideals of Bauhaus Movement of the 19th Century that was characterised with how colour and shapes hold deeper connections and also can communicate specific idea or emotion to the viewer. This collection is following WGSN transpersonal trend of Pause S/S 17 and Infusion A/W 17. These trends focus on the idea of blurred line between human and technology and then also resulting convergence between real and virtual.

The motifs and patterns are inspired by the facade of modern architecture building that has feel of motion and transforming materials and surfaces through exploration of new treatments and techniques. Ideas of layering, pixelation and colour rhythm through the combination of shapes and lines will be applied combines with bold colour palette and corrugated paper as a medium can create colour filters. In this way, sensorial pleasure is emoted for soft-touch haptic materials that soothe and delight.

MIXED MEDIA

This project aims to explore effects and textures into mixed media. We need to explore and eventually will discover as many ways each media can be used in order to increase confidence in experimentation with materials. There are different kinds of materials from drawing materials to everyday materials that we can use to create various textures and patterns

REFLECTION, SKILLS AND TEXTURES

This drawing project aims to develop drawing technique with rendering of objects, products or concept using basic layout or own designs with copic markers to highlight different aspect of a design. The object for this drawing should consist of different materials and textures such as silver metal, metal gold, glass, rocks and wood.

Using existing skills of working with the copic markers this module extends beyond their basic use of experiment and investigate new and innovative ways to use the markers. The magic of these markers is in blending the olours together and it will be creating beautiful renderings.

DRAWING WORDS

This graphic collage poster requires me to use all the skills that we have been developing and learn about photography, drawing, collage and create a poster. It is about construct a collage by using drawings and photographs from previous tasks.

I choose to use simple geometric hand-lettering to show the futuristic sense of my collage. After that, I find a site and eventually one of the wall parts at Federation Square, Melbourne becomes my choice due to the geometric style of the building.

People become the consideration of my poster as it gives more aesthetic and life to my poster. The idea of a person looking at the poster because my poster is quite abstract and difficult to be understood. Thus, I want to put a person on that poster to illustrate my idea of a person which is trying to understand what is the poster tell about.

TRANSFORMING GEOMETRICS

This project introduces variety of creative and practical skills which explore constructed textile design techniques, design translation and textile design fabrication (sampling). We are introduced to studio and workshop practices and processes used to develop paper and textile design studies with specific application to knit, weave and 2D/3D concept designs, structures and forms.

For this project, I choose theme of Fractal Geometrics. Fractal is rough and fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts with each of which is the approximately a smaller copy of the whole. They look like similar no matter how close you zoom in.

From this concept, It become my starting point to show how my design style as textile designer would be. My design intention is about extending to mechanism of composition to expand the possibilities of materiality. Therefore, Fractal theme would be suitable for me as it gives me opportunity to explore material combinations and how those configuration of materials and forms can give a meaning to the design.

PAPER ANIMALS

This project will enable us to explore drawing & illustration techniques using Adobe Illustrator. Emphasis will be placed on the exploration of illustrative effects & on understanding the efficient & appropriate use of drawing tools, text & other technical functions in Illustrator. We will design & construct a Booklet containing the animal illustrations developed in Project 1 & base the design of the Booklet around a narrative structure. We will create new textile designs as part of this. Selected scanned, hand rendered designs will be taken from Photoshop & transferred to Illustrator as ‘embedded’ or ‘linked files’.

Using our animals created in Part 1, we will develop a narrative that is suitable for children. This can be based either on an existing story or one you create yourself. We will design a Booklet using this story as the structure, incorporating your illustrated animals along with a background illustration and textile designs that reflect the illustrative style developed in Part 1.

I decide to use Hannah Firmin's illustration as my drawing inspiration. Hannah firmin is a British illustrator and printmaker who is recognisable for her linocut and engraved wood look. The influence of her works mostly by block cutting and centuries old printing traditions from around the world such as Britain, Africa and Japan. She loves to work using media where multi-coloured images can be difficult to achieve. Her technique enables her to infuse pieces with colour without losing that handmade feel.

UPHOLSTERED

This project aims to create a domestic upholstery textile design that is designed with a customer and market of our choice in mind. This requires research into the residential upholstery market. Once designed you will stimulate this design onto a selected piece of furniture that relates to our customer's marketplace and we will develop a document such as a one page spread we would find in a magazine that promotes this design to our identified market.

I choose to use James and Phoebe who are around 30-40 years old and they works in creative community practices such as designer and artist. They could be young family with children live in family size household, with ranging from small to large house space. Loving outdoor activities and plants lovers make them having appreciation for functionality and traditional craftmanship.

It is inspired by Nordic design and exotic style without hurting their budget. Clean with friendly lines such as 2-seater sofa with subtle curves and no clutter will be the best option for interior style and chosen customers. My design theme is based on Nordic design with focus on the natural materials with the use of warm colours, the soft textures and cheerful pop of bright, fresh colours. By maximising natural lghts with the idea lots of windows create a fresh ambiance to the interior.
